This bathroom remodel project was designed for a homeowner who desired a long-term, accessible bathroom space that provided safety but also reflected her home’s natural, rustic charm. Feeling inspired by the warm tones of her wood cabinets against the bright white of the floor and countertop, the home’s wooded surroundings, and the look of her antique makeup chair, we transformed the bathroom into a functional, warm retreat, blending modern accessibility with rustic, nature-inspired elements. Every detail was thoughtfully crafted to create a functional and timeless space.
The Challenge
The primary challenge of this project was designing a bathroom that met the client’s needs for accessibility while maintaining an aesthetic that harmonized with her home’s rustic surroundings. Before the redesign, the client had a wallpapered space complimented with 4×4 tiles, a small corner shower with a gold-framed door, an oak vanity, and an unused bathtub. The client knew she wanted space for doing her makeup, a linen cabinet, and a large shower. She also brought in an antique chair she used to do her makeup and wanted to incorporate it into the new space. We had to play around with the layout and sizing of all the elements to make the most of the space available. Additionally, we needed to make the bathroom accessible so she could safely and comfortably age in place.
The Result
The result is a beautiful, accessible bathroom that perfectly blends form and function. The shower features sleek Onyx Collection panels for easy cleaning and an updated look. We also added a ramp for easy access, as well as niches and grab bars to accommodate her whether she was standing or seated in a wheelchair. The makeup desk incorporates plenty of drawer storage to accommodate various-sized items. We increased the depth of the linen cabinet to provide greater storage space, as well.
The tones and rustic nature of the space, coordinated with the antique chair, brought a personal touch to the bathroom. The backsplash features quartz veining more prominently displayed in the lower makeup area. Every space was used wisely and specifically for the homeowners’ needs, making it safe for them to stay long-term.
Overall, this renovation transformed a no longer functional space to give the client everything she wanted.
