This kitchen renovation delicately balanced a modernization of the space and preserving the charm of an older home. The homeowner desired a more open, functional kitchen that stayed true to the home’s historic integrity while incorporating contemporary features. The new design blends seamlessly into the home’s aesthetic with a reconfigured layout, multiple new functional zones, and restored original light fixtures for modern convenience and timeless appeal.
The Challenge
As an architecturally older home, the existing kitchen was cramped, awkwardly segmented, lacked natural light, and had inadequate functionality. The primary challenge was to open up the space while respecting the design integrity of the older home. We also needed to hide an existing radiator while maximizing available space and ensure all of the client’s requests were fulfilled. The homeowner wanted a seamless blend of modern amenities and traditional charm with a new layout that offered distinct zones for cooking, cleaning, and entertaining which included a television with a comfortable seating area. All of this was to be accomplished while maintaining aesthetic cohesion with the rest of the home.
The Result
We were able to create a more open, inviting kitchen space by removing a wall between the kitchen and dining room, located where the back of the island currently sits. The kitchen has been organized into three functional areas: a cooking zone, a prep and clean-up area on the island, and an entertainment space for the family. Three sinks are built into the new layout, each serving a distinct purpose: One positioned behind the range as part of the cooking area; a second on the island for easy clean-up; and a third within the entertainment area, complimented by an under-counter fridge so drinks can be grabbed without interfering with meal prep.
The home’s original light fixtures were refurbished and integrated into the design above the island, while custom shaker-style cabinetry and tilework up to the ceiling ensured the space felt cohesive with the older character. Customized inserts were included throughout the storage areas to enhance organization for the client.
The final result is an inviting kitchen that flows effortlessly, offers enhanced functionality and honors the home’s heritage while providing modern conveniences.
